Whether you're negotiating your starting salary, a raise or something non-monetary, knowing how to be a strong negotiator is crucial. I cannot recommend the following enough: Ask For It: How Women Can Use Negotiation to Get What They Really Want by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever While it's written for women, men can certainly benefit. As a millennial who graduated undergrad in 2009, my professional career(s)--like my peers--have been stunted; all too often we are forced to think that we should "be grateful" for what we have. And while yes, I couldn't agree more re: the deserved gratitude for jobs, that DOES NOT mean that we shouldn't be paid what we deserve (can I get an AMEN?!!). More times than not there IS money in the budget and we won't get it unless we ask. Let's start asking, people! With the help of the aforementioned book I learned invaluable skills that I used to negotiate a significant raise. I also realized the degree to which I was selling myself short when it came to salary.
